“How to appear in ChatGPT?” It is the right question, asked at the wrong moment by most of the people who ask it. Before the tactics, one fact decides everything: ChatGPT does not read a list of ten blue links. It reads sources, decides what it believes, and writes an answer that usually names a few brands. Your job is not to rank. Your job is to be present in the sources it believes.
Once you have read it, you will be able to tell which moves actually change what ChatGPT says, which ones Google already debunked, and how to find out where your brand stands before you spend anything on them.
How ChatGPT decides what to recommend
For most consumer questions today, ChatGPT searches first and then answers. What it says is assembled mostly from third parties: retailer pages, reviews, comparison guides, media coverage, forums, regulators. Your own website is one voice in that mix, and often not the loudest.
Before any tactic, two crawlers decide whether you can be read at all — OAI-SearchBot governs ChatGPT search, GPTBot governs training — and there is a robots.txt versus noindex nuance that most articles get wrong. We leave that detail, with the OpenAI documentation behind it, to the full guide: /seo-para-chatgpt/.
What does not work
Google settled most of this in its own guide, “Optimizing for generative AI search” (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide):
- llms.txt. Named as a myth by Google. No evidence it changes what assistants say about you. Anyone selling it as a visibility lever is selling what the documentation debunks.
- Special schema for AI. There is no AI-specific markup. Schema that helps search clarity helps; a magic “GEO schema” does not exist.
- Chunking tricks. Another named myth. Write clearly for humans and the machines cope.
- Guarantees. Nobody can guarantee an appearance in ChatGPT; the answers vary by user, by phrasing and by run. What a serious provider does commit to is the instrument and the run: a prompt bank complete and useful for your industry, and a study that produces findings you can act on. What nobody commits to, us included, is that the actions you take afterwards will move the numbers in the next measurement. A guaranteed position is the one promise to walk away from.
And the uncomfortable one: optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, in Google’s words. Recoverable content, real authority, clean technical basics. The boring half is true.
What actually moves it
If the answer is assembled from the open web, the open web is where the work is:
- Be present in the sources the models cite. For consumer products that usually means retailer product pages, review platforms, comparison guides and earned media. Which ones, in your category, is a measurement question, because they differ.
- Keep content recoverable. Do not block OAI-SearchBot by accident, and check what your robots.txt and noindex settings actually do before you assume.
- Entity consistency. The same name, the same category description, the same facts about who you are, everywhere. Models reconcile sources; contradictions make you harder to recommend.
- Earned mentions. Third parties saying your name in the right context beats you saying it about yourself. PR and reviews are not decoration here; they are inputs.
Notice that almost none of these moves live on your own domain. Working through the sources the models cite — retailer pages, commissioned editorial, earned media — is its own job: /trabajo-sobre-fuentes/.
Why measure before you optimize
Here is the trap: you ask ChatGPT once, you are absent, and you conclude you are invisible. Then you ask again tomorrow and you are there. A single ask proves nothing in either direction; the same question returns different lists across runs.
So before spending on optimization, spend on knowing two things: which sources actually carry the answers in your category, and where you stand today against the brands that get named instead of you. That is a measurement problem, and we built a tool for it.
